NAME OF THE DOG

2005/11/21 - 12/10

Gallery Naruyama presents an exhibition centered around next years zodiac sign; the dog.

From ancient times, the Japanese have welcomed the coming new year by celebrating it's zodiac sign. As a charm of good luck and hope, it may be possible to consider these characters as the forerunneres of anime and mascots, so prevalent in Japanese culture and even contemporary art today. The seventh zodiac sign ahead of your own is considered expecially lucky, and collecting ornamnts of that particular sign is said to bring success in the coming years.Since we are welcoming the coming of the year of the dog, this exhibition may be especially lucky for those born in the year of the dragon. We at Gallery Naruyama cherish these ancient and traditional customs, while also looking ahead into the future. As you may recall from this past April, we present work by Fuyuko Matsui of a Borzoi, with outgrown hair and nails. Tsuchiya Yoshimasa depicts greed and passion through his interpretation of an indoor dog.Painter Toru Kamei presents a dog in the form of a symbolism painting from the Meiji Period.Masahiro Habuchi uses his dyeing skills to depict a dog of his own. This exhibition will surely be one to enjoy before the coming of the new year.
